5th Avenue Bridge Complete with Stunning D.Friel Murals

Thanks to community input, construction of the new SE 5th Avenue bridge is complete and features stunning marine-inspired murals by renowned artist Dennis Friel. The bridge, built in 1959, was scheduled to undergo extensive repairs, as proposed in the initial scope of work; however, following public input meetings, the City created a more comprehensive plan to replace, elevate and enhance the bridge.

So as not to delay the opening, a quick impromptu ribbon cutting was held just before the bridge opened on Monday, May 23rd, which brought out a number of neighborhood residents excited to be a part of the bridge opening.

The goal to create a safer, more efficient bridge for both motorists and pedestrians was accomplished to the delight of residents, who also greatly appreciate the City’s efforts to have the bridge become a signature work of art. The bridge will feature four vibrant murals, two on each side, depicting beautiful marine scenes including manatees and porpoises.

Pompano Beach-based artist Dennis Friel, acclaimed for his vivid celebrations of coastal culture, has built a body of work collected by clientele around the world. His artwork has been featured at premiere fishing tournaments, on fashion apparel, in the pages of elite global publications, and even adorns Jimmy Buffet’s fishing vessel, Last Mango.

Friel’s work for the City of Pompano Beach includes large scale murals that beautify the Intracoastal bridges. He received the distinguished 2019 Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Arts and Culture Award for his efforts on this Intracoastal beautification project.
